Survalent offered modern, reliable software; low total cost of ownership; and the ability to work with our new infrastructure and equipment.
The Challenge
Da Nang Power Company (DNPC) needed to automate its distribution grid to improve reliability and operational efficiency of its power supply. Due to the open-circuit closed-circuit mode of its power grid, operators had to manually isolate a fault’s location, change the grid connection, and transfer the power when there was a grid malfunction, resulting in widespread and lengthy power interruptions. To overcome this, DNPC launched a 5-year plan to establish a smart grid, beginning with the installation of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) to automate information collection and better manage load demands through the day. DNPC also began researching new technologies in distribution network automation.
The Solution
As the first utility in Vietnam to implement a smart grid, DNPC was under great pressure to select a vendor that could deliver software proven to meet their needs. DNPC selected SurvalentONE SCADA to automate and centralize its network operations and SurvalentONE FLISR for improved distribution management.
My Phuong Trading Co. Ltd. (MPCO), Survalent’s local partner and integrator, worked with DNPC’s engineers to commission SurvalentONE SCADA with SmartVU within 45 days. For its FLISR implementation, DNPC followed a two-phase plan – implementing FLISR on two medium voltage transmission lines supplying power to hospitals and government buildings in Phase 1 and on the remaining seven feeders and updating the DMS equipment in Phase 2. DNPC also chose to deploy Survalent’s substation automation software, StationCentral, which includes HMI and Gateway to automate four of nine 110 kV transformer stations.
Based on initial results, DNPC expects to see a 43% decrease in SAIFI and a 16% reduction in SAIDI once FLISR is fully deployed. With SurvalentONE SCADA and FLISR enabling a smart grid, DNPC now serves as an example for other utilities in Vietnam to modernize their networks.
Da Nang Power Company (DNPC) is an electrical utility serving 300,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customers in the city of Da Nang, Vietnam. DNPC and 12 other electric utilities operate under the management of Electricity of Vietnam Central Power Corporation (EVNCPC.)
