Survalent, Electroval win bid to provide ICE “first of its kind” ADMS and DERMS platform

The unified platform will help Costa Rica achieve its UNESCO SDG 2030 Agenda goals for affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities, and climate action

BRAMPTON, Ont, April 5, 2023 – Survalent, a leading provider of advanced distribution management system (ADMS) software, along with its local partner Electroval, a regional supplier of automation solutions, electrical materials and equipment, has won the bid to provide the Costa Rican federal electric company, Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE), with a state-of-the-art ADMS and DERMS solution. With this win, Survalent is now the ADMS vendor for 75% of the Costa Rican energy distribution market.

Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) is a public-owned company that serves over 1 million customers. ICE is highly cognizant of Costa Rica’s commitments towards fulfilling the UNESCO Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030 Agenda. To do its part, ICE has committed to bringing the number of electric vehicles in the country to 1 million by 2030, which requires a sophisticated ADMS solution. In addition, major shifts in weekly population movement means equal shifts in the country’s consumption of electricity, an additional challenge that any new solution must overcome.

Survalent and Electroval will deliver a multifaceted unified platform that includes SCADA, OMS, DMS, a specially-designed interface based on Survalent SmartVU, and continuing support after implementation. The ADMS and Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) solution provided will be the first of its kind in the Americas, offering the full suite of SurvalentONE solutions for distribution management, automation, outage management, and renewables management. Software and custom interface development will be handled by Survalent, configuration and administration by Electroval, and both will serve a joint commitment to support and training. The phased implementation allows 6 months for SCADA, followed by 12 months for OMS, and lastly 6 months for DMS and DERMS activation.

ICE’s Electricity Director Roberto Quirós Balma said, “We are committed to supporting our national obligations toward the UNESCO SDG 2030 Agenda goals, particularly those covering affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities, and climate action. Partnering with Survalent and Electroval helps us work toward fulfilling these goals by enabling better control and safety in the implementation of clean energy and management of sustainable cities.”

Electroval is a well-trusted regional supplier of automation solutions, electrical materials, and equipment in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. The company was founded in 2004 in Costa Rica and now serves several countries in the region, including Nicaragua, Guatemala, Panama, Colombia, Peru, and the Dominican Republic. Electroval’s General Manager Luis Valverde said, “We are proud to serve our home country of Costa Rica and are committed to offering a great customer experience at every level, from technology to service to training. We trust the Survalent solution to be the best possible for the scope, scale, and needs of the project.”

SurvalentONE’s fully integrated ADMS platform efficiently integrates, manages, and processes data from a broad array of sources and is known for increasing safety, improving reliability, and decreasing outage durations for utilities at a reasonable cost, making it suitable for utilities of all sizes. The Survalent DERMS solution enables the safe and efficient operation of distributed energy resources, eliminating the cost of maintaining separate systems and ensuring renewable assets are operating at peak efficiency.

Survalent’s CEO Steve Mueller said, “We are excited to offer this first-of-its-kind comprehensive solution to support the delivery of clean, reliable energy in Costa Rica. We have a strong track record of success worldwide with similar scale projects and are confident that the functionality and flexibility of the SurvalentONE solution will enable ICE to successfully meet its goals.”
