A control room operator requires significant knowledge, training, and experience to be effective. But the complexity of modern power systems and high cost of service interruptions makes on-the-job training impractical and risky.
Training operators in a production environment introduces the risk of serious errors that can disrupt network operations. It also limits the horizons of learning, as operators are restricted to handling current situations. As a result, operators learn how to handle high pressure, critical situations as they occur – which is both dangerous and undesirable.
To develop confident, knowledgeable operators, utilities must invest in a comprehensive offline training environment that gives them hands-on practice in a variety of situations. Only then can utilities prepare their operators to hit the ground running, while maintaining the integrity and reliability of their grid.
The Operator Training Simulator (OTS) is a comprehensive learning environment for SurvalentONE ADMS that allows utilities to train their operators in an offline environment that mirrors their production system. The OTS gives operators the freedom to learn by doing—to experiment and thereby gain a solid understanding of SurvalentONE ADMS before logging into the production system.
The OTS is a standalone offline environment that enables instructors to choose which saved snapshot of the database they want to start their training session on. To help instructors present dynamic training scenarios, the OTS comes with a tool for preparing detailed scripts that simulate changes in the utility network and they can watch how the students respond to them. With OTS, utilities can train operators in an extremely efficient way without risking network disruptions.
